How To Choose The Best Golf Grips

Prior to purchasing your pair of golf grips, there are a variety of factors that you should keep in mind to ensure that you buy the best type for you. Below, let’s take a look at some of the most important criteria that you should keep in mind when selecting the best golf grips:

                          How durable are they?

When deciding which type of golf grips to buy, one of the most important considerations that you’ll need to make is how durable they are. The more a golf grip is used, it will begin to inevitably show signs of wear and tear, which can then cause the golf grips to become slippery.

When selecting modern golf grips, it’s important to keep in mind that they often tend to be made with softer material that is designed to offer the golfer an easier and more intuitive playing experience.

However, this softer material does often mean that golf grips are unable to last as long as some of the older grips that were made with hard material, which is something to keep in mind when shopping around.

Though durability is important, many golfers choose to sacrifice this in order to achieve a more comfortable grip, but it will likely mean that you’ll need to be willing to re-grip your clubs on a much more frequent basis.

                          What is the tackiness quality?

Besides considering the durability, the tackiness of your golf grips is one of the most important factors to think about when selecting grips, as, without tackiness, golf grips will be unable to serve their purpose.

In a nutshell, the tackiness of a golf grip essentially refers to how well the golf grip will be able to stabilize the hand while it is being held during a swing.

So, in other words, the best golf grip will be able to guarantee that you are able to consistently make cleaner shots with better trajectories, all while feeling more confident while teeing up and preparing to make your shot.

When judging the tackiness of golf grips, it can be easy to assume that the more sticky or tacky they are, the better they will be – but this is not necessarily the case.

Golf grips that are too tacky may cause the user to feel thrown off or uncomfortable while holding it, and golf grips that have near to no tackiness will feel slippery and hard to hold.

Instead, when considering the tackiness quality, we strongly recommend that you make your judgment based on how confident you feel while holding it, as well as how easy it is to swing the club when the grip is attached to it.

In addition to ensuring that you are able to improve the consistency of your swings, some golf grips are even designed to help aid in alignment alongside tackiness, and these two factors work interchangeably to help the user achieve frequently lower golf scores.

What is the overall performance like?

This factor ties in closely with the points we have raised above, though we still believe that it’s just as important to take into account when selecting a new set of golf grips.

The overall performance of golf grips will greatly depend on your own personal experience with them, as well as your own personal preferences.

As an example, there are some golfers who prefer their golf grips to have a little less tack, so that they are able to hold the club more loosely while making long-distance and powerful shorts.

On the other hand, there are some golfers who prefer their golf grips to be extremely tacky, so that they have a more secure and stable grip, and feel more confident taking their swing.

So, with all of that being said, the performance of the golf grips you select should ideally be in line with your personal style of play, as well as how they make you feel while out on the greens.

All of the golf grips we have mentioned above offer an excellent performance that caters to a variety of different golfers.

However, if you’re planning on shortlisting some options yourself and are unsure of what type of grips you should go for, then so long as you make sure that the golf grips you choose are a blend of consistency and durability – you’re not going to go far wrong!

                          Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change my golf grips?

If you want to swap out your existing golf grips for new ones, then many people choose to get their golf clubs re-gripped at their local golf store or by a clubmaker who will be able to professionally do the service for them.

Most golf clubs even have a resident clubmaker who is able to cater to these types of issues, however, it’s also relatively easy to re-grip your golf clubs by yourself – it’s also a whole lot cheaper, too!

Your current grips are going to be pretty tightly sealed to your golf clubs, so you’ll need to make sure that you are using a removal tool to be able to lift the grips off your club, such as this one. Using your chosen golf grip remover tool, gently loosen and remove as much of the tape as you possibly can.

Then, scrape off any stubborn bits until the golf clubs are completely free of any of the old grip. If you find that there are any leftover bits of tape that simply won’t come off, try taking some sellotape and gently pressing it directly over the bits of tape that won’t come off, as this should help to loosen and remove it.

Once you have completely removed all of the tape, begin applying the new grip in a spiral, starting from the bottom and carefully working your way to the very top of the golf club’s shaft. Once you have done this, finish off by applying some more tape over the top of the shaft for extra adhesion.

After you have finished doing this, then take a golf tee and place it inside the hole at the very end of the grip. Once you have done this, you’ll then need to take some sticky grip solvent and pour it directly over the new grip that you have applied, ensuring that you evenly apply the solvent all over.

If needed, you could also choose to hold the gripped end of the golf shaft over a sink or container, and then pour the rest of the solvent all over the tape to ensure that all of it has been fully covered.

Once you have poured all of the solvents, then proceed to align the grip with the club and then gently squeeze the grip over the largest end of the shaft.

As soon as you have done this, you’ll notice that the solvent immediately helps to secure the grip of the club. However, take extra care to not stretch the grip too far down the length of the club, unless you want it to be longer than it is supposed to be.

Then proceed to slide the rest of the grip until it is all on the shaft, and wipe away any excess solvent that has been left over.

Once you have completed doing this, you should then leave the grips to dry for a period of at least 8 hours, just to make sure that they have been given enough time to properly dry prior to going ahead and using them.

How long do golf grips last?

Believe it or not, gold grips are one of the most overlooked parts of the golf club, which is why so many people often forget to re-grip their clubs!

Over the course of multiple rounds of golf and regular training sessions on the green, your grips are going to inevitably lose the tack that helps to make them easy to grip. So, in other words, sooner or later, your grips are going to end up becoming slippy!

In addition to that, many golfers do not even notice that their grips have changed until they finally take their clubs to be re-gripped, in which the brand new grips provide a noticeable difference.

When it comes to re-gripping, how long you will be able to go before needing to swap out your current grips for new ones will greatly depend on how often it is that you play with them.

As a general rule of thumb, you’ll want to try and make sure that you are replacing your golf grips every 5-6 months, which works out to roughly around 50 rounds of golf. However, if you’re a professional golfer or tour golfer, you’ll likely find that this period of time is around every 2 months or so.

However, besides rounds of golf, you should also take into account how often you head to your golfing green to practice hitting balls, as this will also impact the tackiness of your gold grips.

In addition to practicing on the driving range, it’s also worth noting that the natural salt and oils in your hands will also break down the quality of your golf grips over time, as will storing them in very hot and humid conditions.

What golf grips are the best?

The best type of golf grips for you will greatly depend on your own personal preference. For example, there are some grips available on the market that feature a rib traveling directly through the center. These types of grips are intended to offer visual aids to the user, and help them to line up their clubface properly to the ball and target.

For this reason alone, ribbed grips tapes are extremely popular amongst beginners and intermediate players who are struggling to square their clubface, and would like a little extra help getting their technique and position properly set up while preparing to take a shot.

On the other hand, the most common type of grip (that you’ve likely already used) is rounded grips. These types of grips do not contain any type of ribbing down the middle of their spines, and the main reason for this is to make opening and closing the clubface a lot easier and more intuitive to correctly carry out.

For many intermediate to advanced golfers who occasionally want to control the spin of the ball, rounded grips are better because they will not feel strange or throw the golfer off when they decide to open or close the clubface.
