The Ultimate DIY Golf Simulator Guide

We all love getting outside and practicing our swing in the fresh air, but sometimes we need to practice our golf game indoors instead (especially if you live in a place like Seattle, where residents can expect rain about 155 days per year). Fortunately, you can perfect your swing with a DIY golf simulator.

Today’s indoor golf simulators provide an impressive virtual golf experience. With proper setup, you can enjoy a round of golf from the comfort of your own home while gaining valuable insights about your swing.

A home golf simulator is a fantastic way for you to train and perfect your game. We’re here to provide you with all the details you need to make your visions a reality.

Reasons to Build Your Own Golf Simulator

There are plenty of reasons why you should seriously think about building your own custom DIY golf simulator. Here are just a few critical ways that an indoor golf experience can save you time, money, and even headaches.

Reason 1: The Pros Use Them

Guess what? Your favorite golf players don’t just practice their game outside. Pros use golf simulators regularly to practice in the off-season. If you want to take your game to the next level (maybe not tour level), it’s not a crazy idea to invest in a golf room for yourself.

Reason 2: You Can Play Rain or Shine

Bad weather? No problem! With a golf simulator, you can play your game rain or shine. You’ll get to hit with a real golf ball, monitor your ball flight and even figure out your ball speed! This allows you to stay in rhythm when the weather isn’t favorable.

Reason 3: There Is Excellent Technology Available

Some people think that golf simulators are little more than a putting green laid out on your office floor. Nothing is further from the truth!

Today’s performance simulator options are vast immersive experiences that let you step right inside the game virtually. Best of all, there are options for just about every price point that you can imagine. You can build your own indoor golf center on a budget or spend big if you have the funds.

Reason 4: Built for Beginners & Pros

If you’re just getting started with the fun (but sometimes frustrating) game of golf, having a golf simulator is an excellent way for you to develop a consistent swing. Get dialed in before heading out to a corporate golf outing or hitting the links with your friends.

If your skill development requires some extra attention, a golf coach can help you from the comfort of your own home. Forget the intimidating country clubs and spectators, all you need is a coach and a golf club to start improving your game.

How to Build a Golf Simulator

There are a few things that you need to figure out right from the start. The first item on the list is choosing where you want your golf simulator to be located. Remember, you need a sizable amount of space to set things up properly. If possible, choose a relatively private location where you won’t be disturbed or disturbing others.

Next, you will need some proper equipment. Golf simulators operate with the help of a launch monitor/swing analyzer that pairs with a golf simulator software. With those tools as the foundation, you can build a fully-functional golf experience with the addition of a projector, a golf screen and a golf mat.

Get all of your details in order before making any moves. Careful planning will ensure that you will have the best experience possible. Don’t worry; we’ll review everything you need a little further down in this guide.

Homemade Golf Simulator Room Dimensions

It’s time to decide on the right space to set up your golf simulator. You may have a location option in mind, but you will need to make sure that the area is large enough to accommodate you, a projector screen, a swing pad and more. You don’t want a room that’s too small. Limited space will affect your swing and ultimately hurt your game.

Find a room that has more space than you think you will need, primarily to accommodate big swings. A 10-foot by 10-foot space is usually sufficient, and you want the height of the room to be at least 8.5 feet high. Remember, you will be taking a full backswing with your clubs, so you want plenty of clearance above your head.

For a project of this scale and scope, it makes sense to measure the dimensions of the room before you start any construction. Again, do your prep work so the rest of the details fall into place.

Places to Build a Golf Simulator

Although you can technically build your golf simulator anywhere, there are a few spots that are more popular than other ones. If you’re ready for the ultimate golf man cave, here are some space to consider.

Garage Golf Simulator

If you’re lucky enough to have a garage, this is one logical option for setting up a golf simulator. You may have to empty out all the junk you’ve collected over the year (yard sale anyone?) and keep the cars in the driveway, but there are several benefits to building in the garage.

Garages are typically larger than other rooms of the house and they often have a better ceiling height. This means that a golfer can easily set up a simulator space with an enclosure kit.

Additionally, garages are usually sound-proof. This means you won’t disturb people or be disturbed by others. If you make a calculation error in your swing, you’re less likely to damage something valuable. Most people put their simulations in their garages, and it is often for the first choice for the reasons listed above.

Basement Golf Simulator

Basements are another solid choice for a golf simulator setup. Like garages, they tend to be on the larger side and contain fewer valuable items. They’re also set apart from the rest of the house so you can practice in peace.

Although basements are excellent choices, they can also have some problems. Ceiling height and cooler temperatures can be an issue. Some basements are prone to mold or water damage.

It’s best to think carefully about your basement’s challenges before setting up a simulator down there. You don’t want your swing analyzer to end up underwater!

Golf Simulator Shed

If you really want to get some serious privacy, consider building your golf simulator in a shed. Sheds are removed from the house, so you will have total peace while you practice your skills.

If you’re starting from scratch, you can build a shed with plenty of space or purchase a pre-built shed. Pre-fabricated sheds can be delivered and set up in just a few hours.

If you’re considering using a shed for your golf oasis, pay close attention to ceiling height and make sure electric and/or climate control options are available. You won’t enjoy spending time in a 30 degree or 110 degree golf simulator enclosure!

How to Choose a Golf Simulator Screen

Now that you’ve got your location secured, it’s time to select a golf simulator screen. This is the place where you will be practicing your game, so make sure that you choose wisely.

Questions to Consider

  • Screen alone (cheaper) or screen enclosure?
  • Materials – polyester or nylon or something else?
  • Retractable or permanent?

The vast majority of screens allow for 4:3 projection (learn more about aspect ratio), putting you right inside of the game. Some screens will display widescreen and others will be more of a square picture. The screen itself will dictate how immersive and realistic the game feels, but of course, the screen needs to be tailored to your room size.

Think about the size of the screen, but also the installation. If you’re handy, installation shouldn’t be a problem, but some people struggle with their hitting screen setup. If you don’t install your screen right, you will never appreciate its full benefits. Shop Indoor Golf to see many of the screen options that exist. You can also check out our recommendations below.

When in doubt, don’t hesitate to call in a local audio/visual expert. They can help you setup the screen so that it’s positioned flawlessly. There are several screens that require little to no installation, so that’s also an option for those who are all thumbs.

How to Choose a Golf Simulator Enclosure

If you’re a decent golfer, you may not need any side netting or ball catches, but one of the perks to a simulator enclosure is that it feels more official. These enclosures catch shots that are slightly off to the left or the right. Choose your enclosure based on your preferences and the options that you space provides.

Best Projector for a Golf Simulator

Next up, you need to find a projector. You will want to invest in a golf simulator projector that gives you the best image possible. There are cheaper options out there, but if you plan to use your setup often,  don’t skimp on the price.

Since golf is a detailed game, you want to be able to see the details. Look for a projector with excellent resolution. High definition projection is a must. 4k uhd models now exist, but you don’t need to go that far (nice move if you do). A projector offering 3,000 lumens or more should give you a nice crisp image.

This is one area of the setup that you really don’t want to cut corners on. The right projector will make your golf simulation experience the best that it can be.

Golf Simulator Mats

A key part of the game of golf is learning how to hit balls out of the grass, so you need a golf simulator mat that mimics fairway grass. Some people assume that basic carpeting is good enough for their simulator. They are wrong.

It’s essential to find a proper golf mat that reflects golf course conditions. A good golf mat will help you for play on live turf and can help you stave off injuries as you’re playing. Many golfers suffer from joint pain or other issues, and these problems can be magnified by a poor setup. With a superior cushioned stance mat, you can limit extra wear and tear on your body and replicate course conditions.

To help you find the best golf hitting mat, I’ve highlighted several popular choices below.

Highest Quality
Fiberbuilt Golf Mat

A pricey investment, but this is the last golf mat you'll ever need. In fact, it will take 300,000 swings to show any signs of wear. Highlights include:

  • 4'x7', easy to assemble and expand
  • Fairway grass feel
  • No club bounceback
  • Compatible with most launch monitors
  • Allows for tee placement anywhere

Budget-Friendly

Golf Simulator Buying Options

Now it’s time to get down to business! How do you actually buy this stuff?

There are so many golf simulators on the market and we highlight most of them here. There’s an option for just about any budget, but you should expect the simulator itself to be the most expensive part of your setup (unless you go with the Optishot 2).

When you consider how much you typically pay for:

  • a round of golf (multiplied by how often you play)
  • golf lessons
  • trips to the driving range
  • food/drink at those venues

Then you can begin to see a golf simulator as a wise investment. Play on your own time, anytime, with no fuel costs or greens fees.

The true DIYer can pick up a launch monitor and build the rest of their simulator setup, but I also highlight simulator package options when available. Package options are super-convenient because they usually include the golf cage, golf hitting mats, golf simulator screen frames, etc. in addition to the simulator itself. In other words, one package purchase will set you up everything you need.

So here are some options to consider:

SkyTrak Golf Simulator – Best Overall Value

The Skytrak Golf Simulator will set you back a bit, but this is the strongest option for the price. The SkyTrack launch monitor is one of the most well-known and respected golf simulation options. In fact, it was awarded a Golf Digest Award for best value golf simulator in 2017 and 2018.

The Skytrak launch monitor is prized for its accuracy. You will see where you are at every step of your game. SkyTrak’s feedback can be used to make adjustments and improve your performance. The software is top-of-the-line, and it’s actually quite cost-effective when you compare it to higher-end models. If you want to drill down and really improve your game, this model is the way to go.

Other fun features include longest drive, closest to the pin and target shooting games.

HD Golf Simulator – Most Expensive & Most Impressive

Go big or go home. That’s the motto you must live by if you’re going to purchase an HD Golf Simulator setup.

This option is considered by some to be the best simulator enclosure that money can buy. Bubba Watson even called it “the most realistic simulator” he has ever seen.

What makes this simulator so special? That’s a fair question given the price.

Let’s start with the graphics. HD Golf uses special image processing software that combines high-res images, satellite data and geophysical data into 3D models. Nobody else does puts all of these pieces together in this way. The result of this extra technology is a breathtaking virtual golf experience.

As you can imagine, an HD Golf Simulator is technological masterpiece. Multiple high-speed cameras work at 120fps to measure nearly 20 crucial metrics. Video swing analysis tools allow for advanced diagnosis and comparison.

The HD Golf Simulator includes a golf pressure mat that utilizes 600 sensors to analyze micromoves that can’t be captured on video. You’ll start to understand your balance, weight transfer, center of gravity and tempo in ways that you never thought possible.

There’s plenty more to say, but if you have the money for this investment, it’s our clear choice for the Most Impressive Golf Simulator.

FAQs

Of course, it’s natural to have a lot of questions before setting up your golf simulation experience. For many people, it’s a considerable investment, and it’s essential to get it totally right. These frequently asked questions should help you drill down on what the best simulator for you is and help you make an informed choice.

Which is the best projector for your golf simulator?

Your projector should have at least 2000 lumens. In general, the more lumens you have, the better your experience will be. Since golf is such a precise game, you will want to ensure that you’re getting the best picture quality available. Of course, you can expect projectors with more lumens to be more expensive, so make sure that it works with your budget and the size of your space.

In smaller spaces, a short throw projector is usually the best option. It will let you broadcast clear images that won’t be blocked by your own shadow.

What do you need to build a golf simulator?

You can build a golf simulator just about anywhere in your home, as long as the space is big enough to accommodate your simulator and you have all of the materials you need to create an immersive experience. Make sure that your space is in order first, then invest in a projection screen, projector, hitting net to catch stray balls, computer, simulator (or swing analyzer), correct software and golf hit mat. After that, you just need your regular set of clubs, and you are good to go.

How do you hang a golf simulator screen?

You have a few options here. You can suspend the screen in a cage if it’s supported in at least four places, or you can mount it on the wall. You can also suspend your screen from a pole or wrap it around a frame.

Can you putt on a golf simulator?

Yes, most golf simulators include putting as part of the experience. Just be sure to check the specifics of the simulator that you purchase to make sure it’s compatible. If you’re actually putting, make sure that you have a net to catch any stray balls and set up your simulator in a room where there are not too many valuables.

Where do you put a projector on a golf simulator?

Generally speaking, you have two mounting options. You can mount your projector either on the ceiling or the floor. You’ll need to check out your space and the manufacturer’s suggestions to determine which works best for you. In most instances, your projector should be at least six to eight feet from your screen. Throw ratio and short throw are terms you need to familiarize yourself with before choosing your setup.

What is the best golf simulator for the home?

That all depends on your preferences and budget. We list most of the top options in our article, so think about what you want to accomplish and how much money you have to spend.

Do pros use golf simulators?

Yes, Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth and other pros all use simulators to perfect their game when they can’t get out on the course.

Can you make your own golf simulator?

Yes and no. You can certainly design your own golf simulator room, but you’ll need to buy a swing analyzer or launch monitor to pair with your setup. The technology component would be tough to build yourself, but if you’re smart, you can build a golf simulator room on the cheap for less than $1,000.

As with everything else, it’s important to remember that you get what you pay for. Your initial investment and the quality of your golf simulator will determine the final experience.

How does a golf simulator work?

Golf simulators work by analyzing your swing and ball flight. Golf simulator companies employ high speed cameras, infrared sensors, radar and other secret technologies to give the most accurate insights possible.

Once a system is setup and paired with a projector, a golf simulator can present the look of an actual golf course and allow you to practice your game from the comfort of your own home. The best golf simulators let you practice on hundreds of courses and give you tips for how to improve your swing and deal with varying types of terrain.

How much space do you have available in your golf simulator room?

You need to have a room that is at least 10 feet wide by 10 feet long. Your ceiling should be at least 8.5″ feet high. The bigger the room, the better the experience. Some golf simulators require larger dimensions, so read up before making any big purchases.

What material is used for golf impact screens?

Golf impact screens are generally made of industrial-strength polyester mesh or nylon, but DIYers have experimented with other materials as well.

What is golf impact screen bounceback?

This term refers to how the ball ricochets off your impact screen. Less bounceback is better, so make sure you choose a quality golf screen to minimize injuries or accidents.

What do I put behind your golf simulator impact screen to reduce bounceback?

Your impact screen should completely cover the area from floor to ceiling for the safest simulation experiences. You can also fortify your simulation experience by using heavy curtains or memory foam. Both of these can drastically reduce bounceback on your golf screen. They may also reduce the amount of noise in your simulation room.

What golf simulator does Tiger Woods use?

Tiger Woods uses the Full Swing Pro 2 Series Simulator.

How do you hang impact screens from the ceiling in golf?

You can use a combination of bungee cords and grommets to hang your screen. The only rule is that it be securely fixed so that it doesn’t move during game play.

What golf mat should you buy for your golf simulator?

Look for a mat that is specifically designed for golf simulator setups. We really like the Fiberbuilt Golf Mat. It’s pricey, but it mimics the feel of real turf and it will hold up over the long term. There are plenty of other options worth considering.
