Putting with the Q Gen 2 Adjustable Golf Club

Can the Q Gen 2 Replace Your Entire Golf Bag?

Some of you may remember my review of the Q Club (an adjustable golf club) back in November 2023. I was pleasantly surprised by its performance, so when I heard a second generation was on the way, I was eager to see how the Q Gen 2 would measure up.

You might be wondering: Can one golf club replace my entire golf bag? My conclusion is yes…not that you won’t miss having your driver or your favorite putter, but that trade-off, especially for short courses, might be worth it.

Because I had such a positive experience with the original Q club, I worried I might not be completely objective this time around. To keep things fair, I handed the testing over to my oldest son, Blake. Not only is he the better golfer in the family, but he also comes to the Q Gen 2 without any preconceived opinions.

Blake usually plays with a fitted set of Srixon SX5 irons, so if anyone in our family was going to put this all-in-one adjustable club to the test (and be critical where necessary) it would be him.

Blake’s Q Gen 2 feedback

I had Blake take this Gen 2 to our local par 3 course and then I fired some questions at him after the round. Here’s what he had to say:

How did the club feel?
“It felt like I was hitting with a normal golf club. It was smooth, no vibration on contact.”

How did the distances compare to your normal irons?
“There wasn’t much of a difference. I assumed I would lose some distance, but I actually overshot a few holes.”

What did you like about the club?
“It was really easy to change between club settings. I also liked the oversized grip which let me adjust for the club type. With the sand wedge setting, I choked up. With the longer irons I was able to grip the club like I normally would.”

Any complaints?
“Not really. The putter doesn’t look like a putter, so that threw me off a bit at first. Once I had a few practice putts under my belt, I had a better idea of how the ball would roll off the club face.”

Would you play with the Q Club again?
On a short course, definitely. It’s nice carrying just one club for the entire round.

If I was going to play a regulation course, I’d choose my normal bag over the Gen 2…mostly for the driver and 3 wood.”

My Thoughts on the Q Gen 2

When I reviewed the first Q club in 2023, I started to rethink some of my preconceived notions about what I needed to play a round of golf. The first generation Q Club was well-received (4.6 out of 5 stars on Q.Golf) and proved that there is a real market for a golf club that can do it all.

It would be easy for the founders to just rest on their laurels. After all, they’ve developed one of the first adjustable golf clubs with real traction.

Instead, the team at Q Golf gathered feedback and went back to the lab in pursuit of an even better product.

The Q Gen 2 takes another big step forward…particularly in the convenience category.

If you’ve never tried an all-in-one golf club, I would start here.

Key Features

  • Adjustable 8 loft head (covers everything from putter to driver)
  • Two part travel shaft (the club easily fits in a carry on)
  • Extra long, 3 position grip
Q Gen 2 Club Settings
The Q switches from a putter to a lob wedge in a matter of seconds.

What Changed Between Q Gen 1 and Q Gen 2?

The most significant change, in my opinion, is the two part travel shaft. It’s super-convenient to play a golf course with just one club, but its even more convenient to split your club in two, stuff it in your carry-on, and arrive at your destination with a full set of “clubs” in one hand.

No baggage fees. No golf bag. No headaches.

The other significant change would be the club head itself. I thought the original Q club felt solid, but the Gen 2 head is about 5% lighter/smaller and it has an improved weight distribution specifically for putting.

Since putting with the Q is arguably the most unique part of the experience, I am happy to see that extra thought was invested here.

Switching between settings is also easier. There are clear lines for every loft setting, and a simple click sound lets you know when you’re locked in place.

Q Gen 2 in a Suitcase
It’s hard to argue with the convenience of a golf club that fits in your suitcase.

Should You Ditch Your Golf Bag for the Q Gen 2?

That depends.

If you’re looking to play tour-level golf some day, you’re going to want your full set of clubs. The professional golf world isn’t ready for a phenom who just plays with the Q.

If you’re a casual golfer who values convenience over tradition, I think you should give then Gen 2 a try. The ideal candidate meets at least one of the following criteria:

  • Prefers to play par 3 or executive courses
  • Likes to walk courses instead of riding
  • Travels and likes to play golf on the road
  • Is open to a less traditional golf club experience

I think the Q Gen 2 makes a round of golf more fun and less cumbersome, but you need to play a few rounds with this club before drawing any conclusions. The video I’ve included below offers some tips for getting accustomed to the experience.
