How Many Golf Balls Come in a Box? A Sleeve?
When it comes to golf equipment, there are no dumb questions. This is especially true if you’re new to golf or shopping for golf gifts.
To make your life easier, I want to tackle a few common golf ball questions, starting with:
How many golf balls come in a box?
There are typically 12 golf balls in a box.

Golfers lose hundreds of thousands of golf balls each year, so buying a few dozen golf balls for a friend is a thoughtful way to save them some money and fill their golf bag with ammunition.
Case in point: I purchase my father-in-law a pack of Titleist Pro V1 almost every year as a Christmas gift. He isn’t a professional golfer, but he has a good swing speed and can make the most of this premium ball.
By doing this, I save him $50 that he can spend elsewhere.
If you’re buying golf balls as a gift, you can take your gift efforts up a notch by personalizing those golf balls. The golf ball manufacturer (or distributor) will sometimes let you add initials or a logo to the ball.
However, if you’re shopping for beginner golfers, this expensive add-on may be a poor investment (since most of those personalized golf balls will end up in the golf course pond).
For reference: Most golf ball boxes measure about 7″ wide by 1″ tall by 5″ deep. This assumes the box is laying flat on a table. If you’re shopping and come across a larger box of balls, you may want to double-check on the quantity.
Some brands sell a mega-box that contains 36 golf balls. Go big or go home!
How many golf balls are in a sleeve?
A sleeve of golf balls typically contains 3 golf balls, and a typical golf ball box contains 4 sleeves.

I hate to make you do math, but if a box of golf balls contains 4 sleeves with 3 balls each, that adds up to a dozen golf balls.
If you’ve never seen a golf ball sleeve before, I’ve included a photo below. It’s basically a rectangle box measuring 1.7″ x 1.7″ x 5.1875″.
Your local pro shop may sell boxes of golf balls AND sleeves of golf balls.
A skilled golfer may only need 3 balls for their entire round, so having multiple buying options give those golfers some flexibility.
How many golf balls come in a pack?
When you say “pack”, I’m assuming you mean “box. And in that case, 12 golf balls typically come in a pack.
This is the standard way that golf balls are sold, but there are some companies who go rogue and break with this tradition.

Golf Ball Purchasing Questions
Where can I buy a dozen golf balls?
Your cheapest option is to shop online for golf balls. Retailers like Amazon (#affiliate) offer some of the best prices and the fastest shipping.
However, other options include your local pro shop or big box stores that carry sports equipment (including Walmart).
How much does a box of golf balls cost?
That depends on what type of new golf ball you purchase. A box of golf balls typically costs $19-$49, depending on the brand.
There are some exceptions, of course.
For example, you may be able to find a dozen two piece Nitro golf balls for less than $10. On the flipside, a premium golf ball like the Dixon Fire is one of the most expensive golf balls in the world. One box costs almost $100!
As a general rule, the price of the golf ball goes up based on:
- The number of layers the ball contains
- The material used for the cover (urethane, surlyn, etc.)
- The reputation of the brand name
- PGA Tour endorsements
How do I know what golf ball to buy?
This is an important question, as not all golf balls are created equal.
If you’re shopping for an average golfer, getting more distance off the tee is often a top priority. See my list of the longest golf balls for distance or just purchase them some Callaway Supersoft. There are plenty of options in the distance ball category.
If you’re shopping for a beginner golfer, see my list of the most forgiving golf balls. These balls will fly straighter, even on mishits. The TaylorMade Soft Response and the Bridgestone e6 are good choices in this category.
If you’re shopping for an older golfer, I made a list of the 5 best golf balls for seniors. These options take a slower swing speed into account while still trying to provide maximum distance. The Callaway Supersoft and the Titliest AVX are two of my favorite choices here.
Finally, if you’re shopping for someone who you know is a talented golfer, you’ll want to stick with a premium ball that offers good distance off the tee and the right spin control near the green. The Titleist Pro V1 is often the most popular choice for this group, but if you’re shopping for a Tiger Woods fan, you can also look into his Bridgestone ball.
You’ll also want to make sure the new ball you choose is USGA (United States Golf Association) approved. If it isn’t, this distinction is usually noted on the box.
